Primary Hypersomnia

Primary hypersomnia is a sleeping disorder that causes feelings of excessive sleepiness and fatigue in the daytime. What differentiates primary hypersomnia from recurrent hypersomnia is that the symptoms are always present. If an individual suffering from hypersomnia realizes that the symptoms come and go and tend to disappear for prolonged periods of time, it is more likely that they are suffering from recurrent hypersomnia. Researchers have identified various genetic disorders that have been linked to this condition. These include Norrie disease and Prader-Willi syndrome. There have also been different neurological disorders linked to primary hypersomnia including Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.


Primary hypersomnia is characterized by excessive sleepiness. A main indicator of this disorder is that the symptoms are always present and do not go away. Individuals suffering from this disorder will experience difficulty staying awake for long periods of time and will often need to take numerous naps throughout the day. However, despite the long periods of sleep, the individual will not feel refreshed or rested.

Other common symptoms include an increase in anxiety and irritation. In more extreme cases, the individual may also experience hallucinations. If you suspect that you may suffer from this disorder, it is important to consult a physician since there is a chance that it may be linked to other medical conditions such as narcolepsy or a nervous system dysfunction.

For more extreme cases, prescription drugs may be required to maintain this condition. Physicians will usually prescribe stimulants to help the patient deal with the symptoms of this disorder. However, these prescriptions will do little to cure the actual condition.


Primary hypersomnia is a condition that will likely affect the individual for their entire life. In certain cases of recurring hypersomnia, such as the Kleine-Levin syndrome, the disorder will sometimes regress when the individual has reached middle age. Unfortunately, this is not the case with primary hypersomnia.

The lack of energy that is associated with primary hypersomnia can sometimes lead to feelings of depression and social reclusion. Feelings of depression can naturally lead to other disorders that are exacerbated by drug and alcohol abuse.

Although the consequences of this disorder are not life threatening, they can really have an impact on an individual’s professional and social life. Due to the fact that this disorder is a lifelong condition, it is important to learn how to manage the symptoms in order to minimize their effects on your daily life.
